2002 Worlds

This years tournament has 53 players signed up so far.  Barring late cancellations, this means we will have 6 divisions of 9 players, with one group having a dummy team.

This years field, one of the most competitive ever assembled for a National Tournament, includes nine former worlds champions.  They are Steve Davidson (2001), Ed Killmer (2000), Bill Meinhardt (1998 and 1992), Pete Nelson (1997), Mike Naidus (1996), Fred Meier (1994), Stan Suderman (1992), David Atkinson (1989) and Will Roberts (1987).     Of the former worlds champions, four have also finished second, David Atkinson to Fred Meier in 1994, Ed Killmer to Pete Nelson in 1997, Bill Meinhardt to Stan Suderman in 1992 and Stan Suderman twice, once in 1991 and again to Mike Nowakowski in 1999.

This years favorites are the Leong brothers, Don and Ben.  Don won three tournaments plus the west regional and Ben won three tournaments.  Last years champion Steve Davidson had an off year with some dismal luck, but he is not to be counted out.  Mike Naidus had an incredible year of almost winnings tournaments, finishing second twice and third or fourth four times.

The National Points Championship is also up for grabs with Don Leong holding a good lead.  If any one of the top contenders wins the tournament though, he will pass Leong.  The winner of the tournament will get 53 points, plus one point for each win and one point for each game over .500.  The second place finisher will get 21 points,  plus one point for each win and one point for each game over .500.  All others only get one point for each win and one point for each game over .500.  For the current leaders in the National Points Championship see National Points.
